NORTH BERGEN, NJ – (September 21, 2022) The Waterfront Alliance of New York Harbor will honor Stephen Knott, Secretary-Treasurer of the International Longshoremen’s Association and John Nardi, President of the Shipping Association of New York and New Jersey, on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 with the “2022 Heroes of the Harbor” Award for their contributions and those of the ILA and Shipping Association keeping the Port of New York and New Jersey open and working throughout the nearly three-year Covid-19 world-wide pandemic.

At a reception to be held at the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Wednesday, October 12, beginning at 6 pm, the leaders of labor and management will be recognized for their “commitment during the Covid-19 crisis that continues to keep essential supply chains intact across this country,” according to the Waterfront Alliance.”

The organization praised the career and accomplishments of Stephen Knott: “We honor Mr. Knott for his accomplishments serving as ILA Secretary-Treasurer for nearly a decade and as a veteran of over a half century with the ILA. Mr. Knott has dedicated his ILA career to championing the rights of ILA members and is a prominent leader promoting respect, civil rights, and diversity throughout his tenure.”

Shipping Association President John Nardi is being recognized “for his career and commitment to the maritime and shipping industry, his problem-solving skills in contract negotiations, and his lifelong dedication to the economic engine that is the New York and New Jersey harbor.”

Ms. Sharlene Brown, Executive Director, YMCA of Greater New York/Castle Hill will also be honored on October 12th as a “Hero of the Harbor”.

“I truly appreciate this honor,” said ILA Secretary-Treasurer Steve Knott. “I’m grateful to share the stage with my friend and management partner John Nardi and this recognition truly belongs to the ILA longshore workers in the Port of New York and New Jersey and their employers and Port Authority who all worked together since early 2020 keeping cargo moving into and out of our port during a very perilous and dangerous time. They are all America’s Front-Line Heroes.”
