DAY TWO of the ILA International Convention was packed full of so many passionate and important talks. Here are a few highlights

Dennis Daggett, Executive Vice President of the ILA, spoke first this Tuesday. He applauded the ILA for keeping the ports operational during the pandemic, and showing the world the importance of the ILA. He also spoke about his relationship with the IDC and gave us updates on our strong international bonds of solidarity throughout the world.

“No one will interrupt our mission to provide power and representation around the world.”

“An injury to one is an injury to all.”

Daggett then spoke about contract negotiations and got a standing ovation when he mentioned that the days of the gentlemen agreements are over. “We want ironclad language and the actual intent of that language in writing. Years after we sign the contract, people get amnesia.”

“We are coming with everything we have in our arsenal. We showed the world how important the work we do is [during covid] and now is our time to get paid. Two and three percent raises is not going to cut it this time. Our membership deserves more. And if we don’t get it, we are gonna be hitting those streets.”

Governor Murphy of the State of New Jersey said, “We will give them a fight with Harold in the lead and me right by your side. I promise you.”

Alan Robb, President of the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District spoke about the upcoming contract, “Make no mistake about it, we are gonna make history. I don’t just mean for the ILA. We are gonna make labor history.” He also spoke about being better internally as an organization. “85% give or take of what we do is resolving internal conflict resolution. Can you imagine how powerful we could be if that number went down to 5%?”

Joseph Ragusa, the Chairman of the Board and President of the Metropolitan Marine Maintenance Contractors’ Association, Inc. mentioned that the ILA is a gold standard among unions and the envy of so many people out there.

President Daggett ended the day joined by IDC Zone coordinators and dockworker leaders from around the world on stage.
