Juneteenth Letter from ILA South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District President
Dear Friends,
June 19th is recognized as a national holiday commemorating the 1865 announcement in Galveston, Texas that President Abraham Lincoln had abolished slavery two-and one-half years earlier, September 22, 1862, effective January 1, 1863. 162 years after the Emancipation Proclamation and 160 years after United States General Granger arrived in Galveston declaring all slaves were free, the ramifications of slavery and racism continue today.
Today, rather than rewarding institutions and employers for celebrating our diversity, they are penalized. The ILA stands strong and united on our unique diversity. It is our diversity that makes us strong and united. With the Juneteenth holiday we proudly celebrate our diversity and continue our mission of serving the men and women who make the ILA strong and united!
We disclaim those that talk in racist code and emit hatred. We honor our history, our diversity! Happy Juneteenth! Stay safe. Thank you for all you do.
God bless America and the ILA.
Fraternally,
Alan A. Robb
ILA SAGCD President
