Dear Friends:
The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was born January 15, 1929. This year we honor him on his actual 95th birthday. Of course, we know his life was cut short by a racist assassin in 1964 while he was fighting for the rights of sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee. Reverend King understood the power of solidarity. He understood the need for worker rights. He was killed engaged in that struggle. We face many of those same struggles now, 56 years after his death. That is why we pause each year on the third Monday in January to commemorate his life and his teachings. Similarly, 2024 promises to be a year of struggle; for our Nation, our world, and even our beloved ILA. In the name and memory of Reverand King, we cannot allow the spreaders of hate to interfere with our moral compass. In his memory, we must fight and resist those who demean and degrade, who incite and provoke. This year we must demonstrate our solidarity, as the Memphis sanitation workers did in 1968, and speak out at the voting booth, work sites, and churches. We cannot allow the forces of hate to prevail. “We shall overcome!” Reverend King had a dream—it is our responsibility to work toward achieving that dream!
