ILA Local 1410, of the International Longshoremen’s Association, proudly celebrated the life and legacy of Melvin “Blue” Franklin of The Temptations during a special community mural unveiling block party held alongside Franklin’s family, friends, and local supporters on Saturday May 23, 2026.
The event centered around the unveiling of a beautiful new mural honoring the legendary bass vocalist. Painted on the wall of the union property just down the road from where Franklin grew up in Mobile, Alabama, the mural serves as a lasting tribute to one of the city’s most influential musical icons.
Honoring a Musical Legend
Known around the world for his unmistakable booming bass voice, Melvin “Blue” Franklin was a founding member of the legendary Motown group The Temptations. For more than 30 years, Franklin helped shape the sound of one of the most iconic groups in music history.
His voice became a defining part of timeless classics such as “My Girl,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” Alongside fellow founding member Otis Williams, Franklin remained one of the only members to stay with the group throughout its decades-long success until his passing in 1995.
A Tribute Rooted in Mobile
For ILA Local 1410, the mural represents more than just artwork — it represents community pride, cultural history, and the importance of honoring those who paved the way and inspired generations through their talent and perseverance.
It makes it even more special that the mural is located just down the road from where Franklin grew up, and will serve as a meaningful reminder of the impact that Mobile natives have had on music, culture, and history around the world.
Bringing the Community Together
The Mobile Arts Council worked with the family of Mr. Melvin Franklin, to select an artist to create a mural in his honor. The mural was then created by talented local artist JD Swiger.
The block party brought together members of the community – alongside Melvin’s family members – for a day of celebration, reflection, music, and storytelling.
Special thanks to Mark Bass, President of ILA Local 1410, for sharing this incredible story with the District and helping preserve Melvin “Blue” Franklin’s legacy for future generations.
